Fashion E-commerce Europe: The NIQ 2026 Report Captures a Maturing Sector

NIQ, fashion e-commerce Europe 2026 report

The fashion e-commerce Europe market is entering a new phase: no longer explosive growth, but maturity. That’s the picture emerging from NIQ’s new report, “Decoding the Fashion E-commerce European Market in 2026,” based on digital purchase data from more than 2 million online shoppers across ten countries — Germany, Austria, Belgium, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK.

Growth is slowing, but stays solid

Over the past year, overall e-commerce in Europe grew 5%, while online clothing sales grew just 3% — a clear sign that the fashion sector is slowing compared to the broader digital average. Despite this, fashion remains one of the most resilient and central categories in European e-commerce, accounting for roughly a fifth (20%) of total online spending in key markets, second only to consumer electronics in many countries.

According to NIQ, this slower growth isn’t a sign of weakness but of maturation: European consumers have become more selective about what they buy, pushing brands and retailers to look for new growth levers instead of relying solely on the digital channel’s natural expansion.

Sportswear and Gorpcore drive the sector

Not every fashion category is growing at the same pace. Sportswear stands out as the best-performing segment: 71% of sportswear brands recorded growth over the past year, compared with 51% of fashion brands overall. A key role is played by the Gorpcore trend — blending outdoor technical apparel with everyday style — whose shoppers spend significantly more than traditional activewear buyers, delivering above-average growth rates for the segment.

Black Friday remains decisive

Promotional events continue to weigh heavily on fashion’s performance: Black Friday alone generates 9% of annual online fashion sales in Europe, confirming it as a key moment not just for immediate revenue but also for acquiring new customers — increasingly willing to try brands they’ve never bought from before, specifically during promotional periods.

An increasingly fragmented market

The NIQ report also points to a growing fragmentation of the fashion e-commerce Europe market: consumers are shopping across an increasingly wide mix of platforms and business models — from traditional marketplaces to second-hand, direct-to-consumer brands, and value-led, price-focused platforms. Resale in particular is gaining ground, driven largely by Gen Z, which NIQ identifies as one of the main drivers of the sector’s next growth phase, alongside resale itself and low-cost platforms.

Italy within the European picture

Italy is among the ten countries covered by the NIQ study, alongside Germany, France, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Ireland and Switzerland. While the report doesn’t break out country-by-country figures, it places Italy within the same broader maturation scenario: more selective growth, price-conscious consumers, and a fashion sector that remains central to online spending. That makes Italy fertile ground for sales formats that stand out not on price but on experience and engagement — exactly what live commerce offers.

What it means for live commerce
Gen Z, driving the next phase of European fashion e-commerce growth

For live commerce operators, this data on fashion e-commerce Europe confirms what we’ve already seen: fashion — alongside beauty — remains the most natural category for live formats, combining the need to “see it live” with impulse buying. A market fragmenting across more channels and formats — from resale to DTC, from value-led to social commerce — is exactly the ground where live shopping can gain the most traction, giving brands and retailers a direct channel to reach an increasingly demanding and informed Gen Z.
